The game begins as Caleb rises from his grave and sets out to rescue his love and destroy his former master. The Chosen fail their master somehow and he kills them all. The "hero", Caleb, was a member of a cult called The Cabal that worshipped the dark god Tchernobog and rose to the rank of Chosen, Tchernobog's four top generals. Its originality and mood made it a cult classic in the genre and is one of the best-selling games to use the engine. Wasn't until Fallout came out that post-apoc RPG's picked up again, because it was strategy-based in combat, and focused less on mutants and more on technology.Based on the Build engine from Duke Nukem 3D, Blood is a horror-themed first person shooter with pop culture references to a number of movies and games. But, instead they got Bad Blood, and it was just different enough with it's live-action combat and tiny viewing area that it didn't quite scratch the itch they had. The cult following that DOS Wasteland created had fans anticipating Wasteland 2. It's sequel, "Fountain of Dreams", is even more obscure. Most folks into PC gaming at the time still preferred fantasy RPG's, so Bad Blood, as a niche post-apoc RPG, met with luke-warm reception. So, it turns into one of those "Wander around and hope you figure out where to go and what to do" adventures. The game is interesting, but easy to get lost in. They did this in order to make the graphics look nicer while still performing well on old computers. You head into buildings 1:1 ratio, etc.īut, it's stuffed into a tiny viewable area on the screen, with lots of wasted screen real-estate showing stats and useless UI chrome that does nothing other then add atmosphere. and just go into it without any kind of transition into it. So, you travel between areas, and then hit a city. So, you move around in the game world map and it's a 1:1 ratio. Bad Blood is a post-apoc wasteland RPG with scavenging and such, but while Wasteland had text-based combat and moving along an over-world map then going into sub-dungeons (a la Bard's Tale), Bad Blood utilized Origin's 1:1 ratio game world map and live-action combat (a la Ultima 6). Spiritual successor to DOS Wasteland (before Fallout came out and got declared such).
